Digital BNF for Children

On the Internet

BNF for Children is made available on the Internet to provide prescribers, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals with sound up-to-date information on the use of medicines for treating children. In particular, the publishers of the BNFC believe this resource:

  • supports NHS personnel who require access to a digital version of the BNFC for point-of-care decisions
  • supports healthcare professionals who need to use high-quality information as part of their professional development, at times when they are temporarily away from their usual source of BNFC advice
  • serves as a reliable reference resource for organisations and individuals unable to afford an up to date BNFC
  • demonstrates that BNFC advice can be conveyed digitally, using standard web technology, to the benefit of the healthcare professional and the patient
  • provides extra material that cannot be easily accommodated in the printed BNFC

BNF for Children is available from three locations each of which has its own access arrangements.

BNF for Children on bnfc.org

BNFC.org includes the BNFC core content (equivalent to the printed book), as well as a number of other pages of news, updates, calculators and so on that may be useful to health professionals involved in the management of childhood disorders. All of this content is also available at http://www.bnfc.nhs.uk.

Anyone in the United Kingdom who wishes to view the BNF for Children may do so free-of-charge. NHS staff may log in to view the BNFC text using an NHS Athens account (available through national NHS libraries) or, if they are not accessing BNFC from NHSnet, they may register on-site and log in using an email address and password of their choosing. In other words, access to the BNF for Children text from NHSnet is only available via Athens authentication. Non-NHS visitors in the UK will also need to register and log in to view the BNFC text.

For NHS staff using Athens accounts, login will provide access to the BNFC for an 8-hour session; all other visitors in the UK will be logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Further details on the background to registration and how to complete the process can be found on our registration page.

Anyone visiting the BNFC website from outside the UK (except those from lower income countries—see below) and wishing to view BNFC material will be offered access to the BNFC core content via the subscription-based service at MedicinesComplete.

The publishers wish to continue to support free access to authoritative information on the clinical use of medicines for visitors from countries of lower financial means. To this end, readers in these countries have free access to the BNFC core content following registration and login. Further details of the lower income countries included in this category are available here

A table summarising these access arrangements is available here (requires Adobe Acrobat® Reader).
